What I actually do
The timber goes in long before the room looks like anything
Anyone can photograph a finished room. This is the half of the job that decides whether the finished room is any good.
StructureRafters, purlins and the gable framed out.
FinishLined, glazed and finished.
What I do
All aspects of woodwork, and planning comes first
I cover all aspects of woodwork, and collaborative planning comes first to the finished result. Turning ideas, materials and spaces into something more practical and enjoyable.
01Garden buildings and structures
Garden offices and timber frame buildings, garage fitouts, fencing and decking. Insulated and finished for year round use.
02First and second fix
Studwork, floors, roofs and cladding, then doors, skirting, architrave and the details that get noticed.
03Structural framework
Timber structure, steel framework and supports.
04Kitchens, pantries and utility rooms
Supply and fit, or fitting a kitchen you have already bought.
05Restoration
Period doors, windows, staircases and mouldings brought back rather than replaced, including sash window overhaul and repair.
How I work
We plan it together before anything gets built
Most of my customers end up doing something slightly different to what they first asked for, because I’ve suggested it on the walk round. That hour is free and it’s usually the most useful one of the job.
- 01
We walk the job
I'll come out and look, free. We'll talk through what you want and I'll tell you what I'd do differently, if anything.
- 02
You get it in writing
A written price with dates on it, so you know what you're spending and when I'm there.
- 03
I'm the one on the tools
You'll be kept up to date with any unforeseen work and changes that need to be made through the project, and you'll hear it from me.
Good work speaks for itself

Westcombe Hill, Blackheath. A side and rear kitchen extension and full refurbishment of a Victorian house in Blackheath. The finished kitchen was on the cover of Real Homes magazine.

Garden room and studio. A garden room built from the base up: brick to match the house, a full wall of sliding doors, insulated and lined out so it works in winter.

Knockholt. Full carcass from scratch after demolition: floors, roof and studwork, then second fix. The garden office at the rear is the only garden building in the portfolio.
All carpentry and building work by Robert Winch. New RSW jobs go up as they finish.

About
I'm Robert, and I'm the whole business
I've been a carpenter for 25 years, most of it on high end projects in London. I've come back to Kent and I work on houses across Medway now, on my own, within about 30 minutes of Rochester.
You'll deal with me from the first phone call to the last coat of paint on the architrave. That's the whole offer.
Where I work
I work out of Rochester and most jobs are within half an hour of it. Find your postcode below, and if it is not here, ask anyway. I'd rather have a conversation, it may be a job that interests me or fits with my schedule.

Questions I get asked
Do you do the whole build?
Yes. All carpentry and building work is undertaken by me, with external trades brought in where necessary, and I'll project manage from start to finish.
Do you draw up plans?
No. I'll talk through options and tell you what will work, but drawings and calculations for structural changes need a structural engineer. I can point you at one.
How far do you travel?
About 30 minutes from Rochester as a rule. If you're further out, ask anyway. I'd rather have a conversation, it may be a job that interests me or fits with my schedule.
How do I get a price?
Send a photo and a couple of lines through the form. I'll tell you whether it's a half day or a fortnight, then come and look properly.
Are you insured?
Yes, I hold public liability insurance, and I'll send the certificate with the quote.
Can you fit a kitchen I've already bought?
Yes, that's most of the kitchen work I do. Send me the plan the supplier gave you and I'll price the fit.
